Highway 97 curving toward 100 Mile House from the north on a summer evening, forest on one side, ranch land on the other.

My vision.

Attraction and belonging. More life downtown. Telling our story. Better together.

I don't want 100 Mile House to become a big city. I want us to become exceptionally good at being a small town.

We have something here that people are searching for.

Fresh air. Space. Hundreds of lakes. Endless trails. Fishing after work. Skating on the lake. Kids laughing in the park. Short commutes. Brighter stars. Familiar faces.

This is the life we get to live here. We don't need to compete with bigger centres by trying to become more like them. We should be confident in what makes us different, protect what we value and build on the strengths we already have.

01

Attraction & belonging

That means attracting people who want the kind of life we can offer. Doctors and nurses. Tradespeople. Entrepreneurs. Professionals. Families. People who want to contribute and become part of a community.

But attracting people is only half of it. We need to create a community where people feel like they belong.

I've seen firsthand what happens when people feel welcomed and part of something. They don't just show up. They invest themselves in it. I believe the same principle applies to a community.

It's how we welcome someone opening a business, a family that's just moved here and the people already investing their time and money in our community.

More life downtown

I also see an opportunity to build on what we've already created downtown. Our downtown is beautiful. The flowers, seating areas and public spaces show what can happen when we put care into how our community looks and feels.

Now let's give people even more reasons to enjoy it. More people walking, gathering, shopping, eating and spending time downtown. More events and activities. More support for the businesses already there and an environment that welcomes new ones.

We don't need to reinvent our downtown. We need to build on what's already working.

Let's tell our story

There's another opportunity I believe we've overlooked. We need to get much better at telling our story.

I believe it's time to rethink how we present 100 Mile House to the world. You could call it a rebrand, but I'm not talking about a new logo or catchy slogan. I'm talking about something much bigger:

Who are we? What are we naturally good at? And what do we want to be known for?

For the past decade, I've been sharing the South Cariboo lifestyle through real estate, community videos and conversations with people considering moving here. I've continually been surprised by how many people simply don't know what we have.

Because today, Google is our front door.

The person searching 100 Mile House tomorrow might be a doctor considering a position at our hospital. A family looking for somewhere to raise their kids. An entrepreneur looking for an opportunity. Or a business considering an investment.

Our challenges are real and we shouldn't hide them. But they're not our whole story. Let's make sure people discover the lifestyle, opportunities, businesses and people that make this such an incredible place to live.

That's more than marketing. It's healthcare recruitment. It's economic development. It's investment.

Better together

And we can't do it alone. 100 Mile House may be small within its municipal boundaries, but we're at the heart of a much larger South Cariboo community. People from throughout the region work here, shop here, access healthcare here, use services here and contribute to our economy.

Our future depends on strong relationships with our neighbouring communities, the regional district, local First Nations, businesses, community organizations, healthcare, other levels of government and the people who live here.

We won't always agree. We don't need to. But we do need to be able to work together.

I want a stronger, more vibrant and more sustainable 100 Mile House that still feels unmistakably like 100 Mile House.

People will come for the lifestyle. They'll stay for the culture.
